It’s nice to feel like a kid again!

The joy on my grandson’s face was priceless when we both got down on the floor in the playroom to ‘play trucks’. Like kids in a candy store, we ripped open the carton and got down to some serious play time.

Set-up was super easy, just remember the batteries. The construction set is multi-sided so you can play from any direction. A nice feature for multiple kids, or in my case, me and my grandson.

The set appears well built and should be able to take some abuse, but I wouldn’t recommend dropping from the roof onto the driveway or beating it with metal spikes. The fit and finish is excellent and there were no sharp edges or ‘pinch’ zones.

The gameplay is tremendous. My grandson loved the interactions and started asking many “how does that work” questions. We added ping pong and make-up balls to make things even more tremendous. Chloe, the cat, however, refused to ride in the truck.

This set will provide many hours of fun learning for any child.

When I first put this together I really didn’t think it was going to hold my 3-year old boy’s attention for very long. In fact, I was a bit disappointed that it seemed like there was only one path to move the truck along and that was it. My concerns were diffused the more he played with it. He likes it and is having a ton of fun with it.

There are actually numerous ways to play, and plenty of places to drive the truck. The most obvious is driving the truck up the elevator. When the truck loads onto the lower elevator, it trips a spring-loaded mechanism that raises the truck to the upper level. Once on the upper level, you can either proceed around the bend to the down elevator, or if you stop at the bend in the road, you can back up. This causes the truck to back into a well-positioned stop that causes it to dump its boulders into the hopper. Going to the upper elevator, the truck loads on, and it’s weight causes it to drop to the ground. Therefore, the elevator is completely self-working without the need for batteries or your child to reset it. There’s also stops on the elevator to prevent the truck from falling off in mid-air. Very well designed.

Once on the ground, you can go around to the boulder-loading area. Running the truck into it, it automatically causes the boulders to fall into the truck. The truck can also back into the lower boulder hopper/elevator to spill the boulders into it, similar to the one on the upper level.

In addition to those activities, the truck can go under one part of the platform, can park in a garage area, and can stop for some gas at the pretend gas-pump. The crane is also movable and I like that the plunger can be worked to pop the boulders out of the claw without having to use a second hand. The crane can reach everywhere from the ground to the upper level to grab/dump boulders.

The remote is durable and the 4 buttons easy to use. Note that you cannot make the truck move forward/back while steering. You have to stop to turn the truck. The big, rubbery tires grip well and move the truck just fine on our carpet. The control is ok, but turning a precise amount is difficult. This is where the wide openings to the ramps are helpful, though they don’t guide the truck properly 100% of the time. There is a spot on the set near the garage for the remote to slide onto when not using it.

Design-wise, this set is very similar to Geo-trax. The remote is the same type of Infrared remote, with similar range and good reliability. The boulders are the same size, so this is a good set to combine or use in the same area. The scale is bigger, so it makes for more of a “quarry” compared to the trains & tracks found in Geotrax.

The only problems we’ve had is that when going on the upper platform, making the turn causes the truck to click like the gears are slipping. It happens every time, so I’m disappointed in this one aspect. We’ve had the occasional fall off the elevator and platform, but it’s funny more than annoying. Most of the time it works well.

Considering how much my son has been playing with it and the cost of similar Geo-trax type toys, I think this toy is priced accordingly (~ at the time I received it).

Half the fun is in the assembly! Sort of Legos on steroids. Once complete there are endless combinations of play. The elevator is a particular hit and is designed with weighting and release mechanisms to move in response to the truck’s arrival. However, it only works without extra assistance one of four times… either the truck’s nose gets too far forward and catches on the lip of the exit ramp or, on the way down, the first elevator tilts on its axis and catches on the support, leaving the descending truck suspended in the air. Usually can be overcome with a quick tap that doesn’t disrupt play too much.

The truck is responsive to the remote control but precise steering is not possible. This is generally overcome by the wide ramps and of course other household furniture is fair game! With the exception of the elevator hiccup, smiles all around.

At first glance the Playskool Musical Activity Ball and Gear Center looks impressive. It has five gears, music, and balls that drop, but then you realize.. is that it? The gears turn and music plays, but the balls simply roll seemingly without a purpose. You can see it in the video, but the concept is pretty basic you push a button, the gears spins, and music plays. While to me it seems pretty simple, but my 11-month old-daughter enjoys playing with it. While I wouldn’t call it her favorite toy she does enjoy it….almost to my amazement.

Other notes

– 2 Double AA batteries required (not included)

– Easy to assemble

– Three main activities – the ball drop, the motorized gears, the manual gears

– Seems to be well built

Final Verdict – My initial thought was that my daughter would lose interest in less than 2 minutes, however I am surprised that she is playing with it a week later.

Overall, this toy is pretty fun for a baby. I’ve played with my friend’s 14 month-old with this toy and it kept her occupied for a good 15 minutes. She had a lot of fun figuring out where to put the balls and got excited anticipating them to pop out; also she had fun taking the gears off and putting them back on and turning them. The balls are large enough that she can’t fit them in her mouth and there’s a little slot for the balls to stay in when you’re not using them (so they don’t get lost). It’s pretty sturdy as she was being a bit rough with it and didn’t fall apart. The music is not totally annoying, so that’s a plus too.

A Toy that Doesn’t Turn Our Crank, July 22, 2010

This review is from: Playskool Musical Activity Ball and Gear Center (Toy)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What’s this?)

Durable and easy to assemble are the highlights of this Playskool toy. Otherwise, it’s had it’s 5 minutes of fame in our home, and likely will be stashed away while my young sons play with other toys they find more amusing. My boys are 8 months and 2 years old. The 2 year old likes to run around with the balls best, and finds the rest of toy less than engaging. My 8 month old has been amused with the music playing, and may become interested in turning the gears–that is if the toy even still interests him in the near future. The gears turn well and they stack easily, but they don’t DO anything. Turning the gears doesn’t make the music turn on, or make the balls drop. The balls must be manually dropped down, and all they do is drop. When they drop, they don’t cause the music to turn on, either. Only pushing down the red smiley face on the right corner makes the music go. If pushed far enough down, the gears will also turn. If the gears played more of a role in causing the music to play or the balls to roll, I probably would have rated this toy better. As it is, the elements are not related to each other at all.

Overall, save your money for other toys which will likely get better use.

I really was impressed with this toy. It is brightly colored, so that babies will be engaged and stimulated. And the toy is durable, which is a bonus for parents. Nothing worse than baby’s favorite toy breaking, but no worries of that here. I loved that the music is peppy and there are several different tunes it plays, so it is less likely to drive Mom and Dad bonkers. But just in case it still does, there is an on/off switch.

And probably the best thing about this toy is that it comes with batteries!

There are no small parts, so no choking hazard. All in all, I say this one is a winner.

This toy was a huge hit with the 2-year-old set! Nice chunky pieces were perfect for small hands and there were giggles galore. I even had fun getting down on the floor and playing with it! It’s colorful, large and just a great all around toy. I highly recommend this toy for about 1 1/2 to 3 year olds.

This is a great starter Weebles set. It lacks the amount of features that are found on the other Weebles sets we have but it is fun nonetheless for most small kids just starting out with the Weebles. The Weebles is a classic product and this set would make a great gift for a new Weebles house or a great starter set for your own.

We absolutely love this toy…in fact, we like all the Playskool gear toys. It is not just something to look at, it moves too! There is a handle on the back so the toy can be easily pushed and pulled. When it moves all the gears (and also the eyeball) rotate around. Our daughter loves it when we push it around, she will grab it and move it herself, and she ABSOLUTELY adores when we roll over her with it!! The noise this makes when moved instantly attracts her as well. There are little fabric pieces on top of its head that provide a soft surface on the otherwise plastic toy that she can grab at. The gears are detachable and very easy for a child to lift up themselves (our daughter carries them off with her frequently). The coolest thing is that the gears on this toy are compatible with the other gear toys from Playskool (Busy Gears and Musical Ball and Gear Center). Bonus!

After I bought this, I sort of had buyers remorse. I really wasn’t sure if my 8 month old twins would be into it at all. I was wrong, they love it! They love both the gears and the critter. They love to chew on the gears, bang them on the floor and hold them. The handle/tail on the critter is great for little hands to push and pick up. I can entertain them for a long time, pushing this toy across the floor and having them chase after it. This toy is one of the first toys they go after, so glad I purchased it.
